The Meeting commenced with Councillor Keith Evans leading the Committee in prayer.

Apologies

Minutes:

Councillor Ifan Davies, Keith Henson, Ceris Jones together with Mrs Alwen Roberts, Prof Densil Morgan, Rev Mark Ansell, Rev Wyn Thomas and

Professor Catrin Williams apologised for their inability to attend the meeting.

It was AGREED to confirm as a true record the Minutes of the Meeting of the Standing Advisory Council held on 16 December 2022.

Welcome

Minutes:

The Chair welcomed to the meeting Mr Lyndon Lloyd MBE who had been appointed as a Lay Member, Mrs Noha Haroun who was representing the Islam denomination and Mrs Non Jones McEvoy who was representing the Primary Sector.

 

The Corporate Manager – School Improvement School Services reported

that she had contacted the Quaker representative, but to date no response had been received.

Correspondence

Minutes:

A letter had been received from Mr Colin Patridge who was representing the Humanist belief, it was agreed that his person specification be requested to consider his application.

6.

Presentation on the teaching of Religious Education and the Religion of Values and Ethics at Aberaeron Comprehensive School by Nia Wyn Jones , Head of Department RE/Religion, Values and Ethics

Minutes:

The Chair welcomed to the meeting Miss Nia Wyn Jones, Head of RE/RVE at Aberaeron Secondary School to make a presentation on Religious Education/Values and Ethics teaching.

 

Following questions from the floor, the Chairman and all Member’s thanked Miss Jones was attending and providing an informative presentation.

7.

National update

Minutes:

The following information was provided:-

         The Welsh Government had provided WASACRE with clarification on the co-existence of SAC (Standing Advisory Councils for RVE ) and SACRE,(Standing Advisory Council on Religious Education.)  which was, that both of these bodies need to be in place until the end of the 2025 academic year commencing in September, which concludes in the summer of 2026. After which, SACRE would dissolve, and SAC would continue

         SACRE Annual Reports

         Communicating through DYSG

         Updates and modifications to HWB

         Query from Local Authority

         Judicial review on Sex Education and Relationships

         Identify support and resources for RVE

         Free Church Council Wales resource

         Quality Assurance of RVE agreed syllables

 

It was AGREED to note the current position.

8.

Request for items for the summer term meeting

Minutes:

         That Members receive an update on Aberaeron Year 9 pupils’ trip to Poland

         That Members receive a presentation on the Universities who offer RE as a subject, due to the reduction of pupils that were studying the subject to become RE teachers in the future. It was noted that possibly Professor Catrin Williams could provide this information.

         That Members send any other items to be considered for the agenda to the Corporate Manager – School Improvement School Services or Democratic and Standards Officer two weeks prior to the meeting

         It was AGREED that the next meeting of the Committee would be held on Wednesday, 05 July 2023 at 930am
